Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the courage of women in past generations and celebrate how their efforts and bravery afforded us all opportunities and freedoms we have today. Women worldwide and across history have contributed to changing how women are perceived through design, innovation, politics, and in the workforce. We stand on tall shoulders and want to acknowledge a few women who have challenged societal norms.

Women in History

In honor of the remarkable women whose breakthroughs have advanced science, art, fashion, design, technology, and the ease of our day-to-day lives, we’re sharing the stories of women whose inventions have changed the world. Whether scribbling designs two centuries ago or still working today, these clever creators deserve to have their stories told. Congress officially created women’s History Month in 1987 — its roots go much more profound with the start of suffragists fighting for women to get the vote in the early 20th Century.

Marie Curie is probably one of the most famous scientists of all time who discovered the first-ever artificially created radioactive atoms — polonium and radium. that would change the world. Marie Curie was also the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in history, let alone in Physics and Chemistry in two different fields. You know who you should be thankful to if you ever find yourself having an X-ray.

Frida

Frida was an iconic Mexican painter and most famous for her self-portraits and remained a feminist symbol worldwide. After suffering an onset of health issues that influenced her paintings, incorporating folk art and Mexican cultural heritage elements, Frida Kahlo explored identity, gender, race, and postcolonialism in her striking self-portraits and surrealist scenes.

Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820; Anthony was a lifelong activist and social justice, inspiring her to advocate for women’s suffrage, women’s property rights, and the abolition of slavery. Anthony founded the American Equal Rights Association and traveled to advocate for voting rights.

Jane Austen

Jane Austen was an English author who wrote about the lives of the British upper class in the 19th Century. Her novels famously poke fun at how people at the time expected women to behave. While she was alive, she published her books anonymously, so nobody knew her as a writer. Some of her publications that you may have read today are Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma.

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was a French fashion designer, businesswoman, and founder of Chanel as we know it. Coco Chanel arose from the post-World War I era, popularizing a sporty, casual chic as the feminine style standard. Chanel extended her influence beyond couture clothing, a prolific fashion creator, realizing her aesthetic design in jewelry, fragrance, and handbags. Chanel №5, her signature scent, has become an iconic product and the only fashion designer listed on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th Century.

We’ve also included a few stories of our modern-day mighty women at Kingdom Branding. They have taken up the challenge of becoming the designers, writers, photographers, and inventors of today — and tomorrow.

“I am too intelligent, too demanding, and too resourceful for anyone to be able to take charge of me entirely. No one knows me or loves me completely. I have only myself” — Simone de Beauvoir
